It is not a rumor. Many have done the swap already.
The G6 Six-speed manual transaxle (designated as the F40 model) has the same bolt pattern as the stock Fiero transaxle. While there are a couple of things required to mount it to the cradle and such. V8 Archie makes a kit to do the swap: http://www.v8archie.com/v8Archie/Prod3.htm
Any engine that can be swapped can use the 6-spd transaxle. It will bolt directly to the 2.8L, 3.1L, 3.4L, 3800, 4.9L and northstar engines. It will bolt to a SBC V-8 using the standard adapter plate.
