87 sunbird Gt non turbo, have a temp scale/gage that is analog/needle. The cold temp is when the needle is resting at around 7:00 position, red hot is at 11:00. Normally, car runs at a cool 7:30-8:00. When approaches 8:30 I toggle switch the fan to run, cooling it down.

But today, I noticed the needle did not go past a "cold needle" of the cold 7:00 position. It did not move! Even after 10 miles of driving where normally it warms to 8:00 or so. Scary! What is going on? Engine computer shows no stored codes (I thought maybe the temp sensor in the coolant port was bad). Maybe it is bad but does not throw the code(?).

What would you do? This is not normal in my car. I know my car- since 1987. No way dos it stay cold with no needle movement.

Thermostat stuck open assuming accurate gauge reading.

Guage or sending unit are bad....

Thanks, people. There is no stat- I removed it to keep engine cooler. So, Doug, where is the sending unit located, and can it be tested with say, a multimeter?

I can remove the guage by yanking the instrument cluster, but not sure if it will be of any use- can the guage be "oiled" of otherwise repaired? If not, where can I buy an aftermarket guage?

No thermostat, what was the outside air temperature?

70 deg F or so. I have had this stat out now for a year. No problems, in fact, engine temp runs ideal. Summer/Winter, no matter. It always heats up some of course, but thats normal. Now needle does not move. I think what Doug refered to as the sending unit is the coolant temp sensor, right?

Yes, see if the wire broke, that would cause the gauge to not move.

No wires---copper feelers aka fingers on the cluster, plastic copper inbreded circuit board... disaster.! Had to replace my cluster..

For gauge, some early cars have it on the thermostat housing , otherwise driver side cylinder head....all the coolant will run out when you take it out... Test it with a voltmeter, volts should rise between cold and warm..

Video :

Hopefully it's not the guage, or cluster connector...🤞

Meant the wire attached to sensor

Here are the fingers I was talking about, the wire connector gets plugged into these ....they get corroded sometimes....
