Grandson's Girlfriend's (complicated) 1999 Montana 3.4 liter, bought at auction (it just gets better) and they tell me it is overheating in traffic. I would assume that the cooling fan is not operating but Grandson says it appears to work (define please appears to work). So, fan relay, coolant temp sensor or the fan motor is where i would start to look, any other suggestions (reservoir is full so I am told) as I will take a look this weekend. I know, a HAYNES as a minimum would be nice.

You are correct in that the problem is fan related.

Thanks for the response. I intend to check the fan operation (turn on AC and see if fan rotates and then with AC off see if she wants to overheat at idle and does the fan come on). After that I will hot wire from battery to fan electrical connector and see if fan runs, if she does not, replace fan motor, if she does, on to the relay or coolant temperature sensor.

It just gets better, blown head gasket, so, cover me I am going in.

Whoever put the car up for auction used a gasket sealer to temp solve the issue and now that sealer is sliming out from between the head and block. Going to pull the heads,, clean up the slime, put a straight edge on the heads (pray no warping) and then put her back together using new head bolts. Anything else?
