Shift problem

Shift does not move from left to right

It only goes back and forth

does anyone have an idea what is the problem?

Car is manual -88 GT

Yes, The nylon bushing on the shifter plate is broken/worn. This causes the shifter shaft to sit at an angle and not move left/right.
If you pull up the shifter plate you will see the area where the bushing goes. NAPA auto parts has the bushings as well as most GM dealerships.
