when there was ice on the ground i went down a small country road. i didnt realize how much ice there was on the ground and couldnt turn. i went straight into a snowbank. i got lucky and my bumper isnt too damaged and has a little chipped paint . when i was driving it the day after i realized that i couldnt see what gear i was shifting into, the lights on the shifter that tell you what gear your putting it in dont light up. would this just be a fuse or something that is harder to fix? all of the instrument panel lights still work and nothing else is wrong that i can tell
yes the shifter lights worked before i hit the snowbank. now i cant tell what gear im shifting into when its dark outside when i could before
its an automatic if that helps, not gears like 1 2 3, gears as in park reverse and drive, (the P R N D 2 1 letters on the left side of the shifter)

My 2000 Pontiac Sunfire didn't come with shifter lights. Did they ever come on?

You could start by looking at the fuses so at least you can eliminate that. And yes, they do have shifter lights that come on when u turn on ur lights.
