also wondering if i would need to up the gears to be able to handle engine

aslong as your tranny is able to handle the power, if you have a T5 tranny ditch it and get a T56 the T5 wont handle all the horsepower. but thats in the case if u have a manual transmission. if u have an automatic what tranny do you have? 700r4? in any case give your u joints an inspection seeing as how theyre gonna be the first things to break if u ever take it to the track

The 700r4 is over it's head with any power improvments. Another thing you should consider is sub frame connectors.
