Space on Pontiac Grand Am's?

There is a little square space opening on Pontiac Grand Am's from years 2000+ and I'm wondering what it is? The space is on the bottom left hand of the steering wheel and below the lights configuration. It looks like a change holder or something but could be a missing option on a lot of Grand Am's. What is it?
 
For smokers, it's a good place for a pack. We don't use the one in ours for anything, though. Other than that, I think it's just a handy little cubby for whatever you can fit in it.
