I have a 1998 Pontiac Trans Sport Montana. Yesterday afternoon I had it up on ramps to check a problem with the ABS Sensor on the left front wheel. When I was done I turned the key to the run position (I did not start the van) to roll it back off the ramps, The selector shifted very hard and as soon as I was in reverse the speedometer pegged all the way to the right. I rolled off the ramps, put it in park and shut off the ignition. The speedo stayed at maximum speed. I checked all the fuses and relays and drove the car up and down the road a few times with no change. I also noted that the automatic headlights were on whenever the ignition was on and it was broad daylight. Later that evening we went to go out, in the dark, the headlights and dash lights would not come on, automatically OR manually.
The next morning I checked again and the lights worked fine during the day but the speedo was still pegged at maximum. I disconnected the battery terminals for several minutes and there was no change when I hooked them back up.
Now the headlights do not come on at all. The parking, turn and brake lights all work fine. I checked the sensor operation by blocking it to turn the lights on and shining a flshlight in it to turn them off, I can hear the relay for the dash sensor clicking and when the headlights are supposed to come on the radio display goes out.
Still waiting to get it scanned for codes but the check engine light is not on. The ABS/Traction Control lights still are though.

sometimes my dash lights and idiot lights go crazy when I switch my ignition back to accessory position , I just have to twist and jiggle it abit and it goes away,so perhaps it may be your ignition ??

Headlights working again

Now the only problem I have is the stuck Speedo. Can anyone direct me to a reputable repair company that wont charge an arm and a leg? I'm in North Central Ohio.

Thank you SteelCity. I got lucky. Took the cluster out and rotated it around until the needle went back to zero. Took the opportunity to change some burned out bulbs and connected it back up. test drive (with GPS) shows the gauge working normally. Keeping fingers crossed for now.
