My speedometer has "issues" when the car is cold - speedometer drops to zero then shoots up to actual speed a few times before settling down. How do I tell if it's electronic or cable driven? I've got a 1991 Convertible with cruise control.....I'm guessing electronic and it's time to pull the gauge cluster to clean the connections.....

p.s. even the Shop Manual ain't much help in this regard.....or the Haynes manual.....

I would start with the vehicle speed sensor before tearing apart the dash.

I can't easily find where the speed sensor IS on my V6. Do I need to go from UNDER the car? If so, looks like ramps are in my future...LOL

Good luck finding new ( try dealer) , 4 used with no warranty now on eBay, or try junkyards.

Doug in P.R.

Good find , I looked real quick on there, but I was looking in the wrong category.
Disconnected the current one to see if the connection was good....was full of water! We'll see if that's all it was tomorrow....but will have the new one by Friday!

So after drying out and cleaning the electrical connection at the speed sensor, all is right with Sunbird world. Now I will test the return policy at Rockauto!
