OK this is my first time on this forum and my first attempt to work on my gf's 97 sunfire. Last night the keys were left in the ignition overnight and this morning the car will not hold a start. it will struggle to turn over then when it does it does not get over 1500 rpms and stalls back out. all other electrical systems work with key in ignition however and battery is relatively new. need some help figuring this out thanks in advance for any advice.

Have you tested the battery with a voltmeter while cranking? If very low, less than 9 volts, remove it and have it charged.

Kinda sounds like the security system has been activated. Is the security light on the instrument panel flashing? If so,there is a reset procedure, and iirc, it only requires turning the key to the on position and waiting ten minutes, or until the security light stops flashing. However, I very well could be mistaken about the procedure, so I suggest a search on the subject. A search for "GM passkey reset" should get you started. Good luck.
