Last week or so I have been having random starting problems. Some days the car will not start, by that I mean it will not crank over.

First thing I thought, great the alternator has died or my battery is not holding charge.

Called my friend out to give me a boost, car still would not crank over but turning the key put a load on the other vehicle. I knew then it wasn`t battery related.

I tapped the starter with a tire iron and it turned over without a problem. It has been running just fine for a day or two, but have noticed it turns over like the battery is dying. This afternoon it turned over but barely before it died. I tried again thinking it was dead but it turned over like normal and fired up straight away.

I tested the battery and alternator and both are working fine.

Tapping on the starter leads me to think that it is probably on it`s last legs. Armature failing and probably putting too much stress on the battery? I thought maybe the solenoid but when it wouldn`t crank I could not hear the starter turning, the only noise was the starter relay clicking.

Anyway, I have a re-man starter coming on Monday morning. Hope this fixes the problem as we have a couple of cold mornings coming. Hopefully the present starter holds up until then!
