highly recommend you buy a copy of the 1972 Pontiac factory Chasis Service manual. Meanwhile, I assume you mean the temperature control panel with the fan switch and the hot cold slide and the mode slide. That assembly comes out by reaching under the dash panel unbolting it and removing it but it is unclear why that would be necessary to change a heater core which is on the passenger side of the car not the center.
I replaced the heater core on my 72 Lemans. I didn't have to touch any switches on the dash. I had to remove the duct work under the dash, passenger side fender, wheel well, ac/heater blower.
