Hi ya'all,
Merry Christmas. I just wanted to know how peppy a 403 is in a 79 TA. I'm looking at one but wondering if the 185HP does all that well.

Thanks,

Hugh

T/A with 403

My 77 T/A with 211,000 miles and a very tired tranny ran a best et of 14.92/91 mph. The motor is original, not rebuilt, with a fairly new timing chain, open headers, and opened hood scoop. The 403, once you let it breath is one of the most under rated motors ever built. Just don't rev it over 5000 rpm.

What's the reason not to rev it over 5k rpm? Would you happen to know of an affordable intake for the 403, I was thinking of going witht the PAW brand? I have a holley double pump to go with it. The 74 Formula I have has about 200k as well, but I think one of the pistons is knocking.

Don't rev that 403 over 5k Danger Danger...!

The one and only reason NOT to rev the 403 motor over 5k is it's bottom end weakness. The 403 has an open web main bearing assembly which makes it a little weak down there...! The motor will do a great job at 5k and below, it's rated at 185hp but has plenty of torque, enough to pull tree stumps. If you need more power then upgrade the intake, carb, and install a mid range cam. That should provide some serious neck renching launches...!

Hood Scoop

Any Ideas Where I Could Find A Hood Scoop?

I have one for a 79, black. I think it might have some slight damage. I bought it for my 80 Turbo to replace the hood with the 455 in it, but never did.

I also have one for a 76 and older too.

PM me if you are still interested. I can go get picts of it.
