Tailgate powerlock

When I lowered my tailgate the lock caught the tailgate latch but the lock mechanism did not retract the tailgate. Now I am unable to release the tailgate from either the key or the trunk release switch located in the dash board. Has anyone experienced this fault before and any ideas as to how to release the tailgate? Thank you.

Not too clear on what you mean by a tailgate? Is the car a 1988 GTA with the notchback option?
What does the "lock mechanism did not retract the tailgate" mean?

Sorry, melsg5, I am based in the UK and what we call a tailgate is probably called a decklid in the USA. Anyway, when I set it down, the lock took hold of the latch but the power lock failed to pull down.

Not sure if you mean it is partially closed.
If so can you get a long screwdriver into the latch and push against the catch to release it?

One of these? A screwdriver is all you need to get it open from the trunk after you remove the rear seat.
