I have a 1986 Fiero 2m4 and I need to replace the thermostat. Where is it located and do you have any advice about my problem. Thanks

go get yourself the chiltons or haynes manual it will show you this. Fiero's are notorious for having overheating problems especially if you're in the south. the factory fan switch is set at 235 which is to late for some cars to turn the fan on but with a stuck thermostat that wouldn't matter anyway. so check that it even works. make sure your cooling system is full as well.

The thermostat is under the cap on the engine towards the passenger side. Just take the cap off (WHEN ENGINE IS COLD) and pull the thermostat out and install the new one. Your message asks how to change the thermostat, What problem are you having???

Fiero's are NOT notorious for overheating. The cooling system works great. You just need to keep them properly maintained just like any other vehicle.

then why did my brand new one off the showroom floor start on fire after only having it for 800 miles??

If you only had 800 miles then you abused the car. The fires had nothing to do with the cooling system. The fires were caused by leaking oil from the valve cover and the side lifter cover. Oil would get low and the cheap piston rods in the 2.5L FWD engine would break thru the thinned block causing the oil to spill on the hot catalytic converter thus catching fire. If you abused the engine by over-revving the engine, The piston rod could also break and do the same damage. Most Fiero's that started on fire were 2.5L engines with over 30K miles on them.

I belong to a local Fiero club and we have a member who bought the 1244th Fiero made in 1984, At present he just passed 389,000 miles after taking a trip from Illinois up thru Alaska and back. The car has had all the proper recalls done back in the mid 80's and the vehicle is all original. He's hoping to break 400,000 miles by next spring. His goal is to get to 500,000 mile then he will retire it from daily driving.
