Thanks for taking the time to ready my question.

I have a 2006 Torrent. The third break light (the one in the spoiler at the top of the rear window) is loose. I would like to tighten it.

I found a post somewhere on line that said I need to remove the rear spoiler in order to tighten the top/third break light.

In my attempt to do this I have taken off the two bolts on the left and right side of the spoiler, and I found the third bolt by opening the back hatch and removing some interior moulding above the window and removed it. I can't find any other nuts or bolts holding the spoiler in place, but I am still not able to remove the spoiler. I used a flashlight and took a look inside the spoiler and it seems there may be some sort of plastic dowel also holding the spoiler in place, but it also looks like there may be some glue in those spots as well.

I don't want to force the spoiler in any way in case I break it... then it would have been more cost effective to take it to a shop.

I have also tried looking this up in service repair manuals, but none of them seem to have any info on this.

I have had a few chat sessions with gmchat@cc.gm.ca but they are not able to help... they just say buy a service repair manual.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks again,
Brad

Hi,

I'm wondering if my question is not explained well enough, or if no one knows how to fix this.

Any reply would be great.

Thanks,
Brad

Apparently not too many people have attempted to remove the rear spoiler on this vehicle. I just spent time with google and have not come up with anything.

Hi melsg5

Thank you for your reply. I also spent a lot of time in line looking for some kind of related post and came up empty handed.

I appreciate the time you spent.

Removing spoiler to tighten third brake tight

Hi,
I went through hell and back trying to find info and a print on tightening the third brake light. Unfortunately GM provides their mechanics with a print that is very vague and does not show what you need to know to properly remove the spoiler without damage. I looked on this forum and did not see anything at the time i was going though this myself. There is three friction pins in the middle of the spoiler in a triangle pattern two toward the front and one near the rear of the spoiler. As long as you have the threes bolts removed you are ready to lift up the lighted side of the spoiler as high as you can go and then use a long wide blade screw drive and start to pry very slowly. Once you get the first one the other two gets much easier. Dont know why these dont show up on the print. It would make life much easier.
Good luck and please let me know the outcome.
Sorry for the bad grammer. I am not a writer.

Hi Al,

Thank you so very much for your post. I have renewed confidence that I just might be able to fix this!

I'll give it a shot later this week and post back with the results.

Again, thanks for the post!

Hi Al,

I FINALLY had time to do this. Since you provided so much good help I thought I'd do the same and take some pictures.

Steps:
1. Lift rear gate and remove plastic cover (PlasticCover.jpg). Remove the cover by putting finger tips between glass and the plastic. Pull gently to pop the 3 blue friction pins.
2. Remove bolts on left, right and center. Take your time on the center bolt, if you drop it inside the spoiler, you've got your work cut out for yourself (BoltPlacement.jpg)
3. Lift up the spoiler from the light side and get a flat screw driver in there. You should be able to pop the front most yellow friction pin. Then place the screw driver head by one of the other pins and twist the screw driver. This should pop the second friction pin out. Same for the third pin. (PrySpoiler.jpg)
4. Picture of spoiler once disconnected (SpoilerUp.jpg, SpoilerUp2.jpg)

Do what you need to do and replace.

Hope this helps.

A big thanks to you Al.

Brad

I can't seem to add any pictures. My file size and dimensions of the pictures fit the specs... If someone could tell me why, I'd try loading my pics again.
