Debate going on here. When installing a timing chain on a 1971 Pontiac 350, do you install "dot to dot" or "dots on top"? I have seen and heard arguments both ways and I suppose if other adjustments are made, either way will work.

the 1971 factory service manual shows them dots on top which aligns everything at #1 TDC

With #1 cylinder on TDC compression stroke Pontiac engine is dots on top, Chevrolet engine is dot to dot.

On a Pontiac engine dot to dot is when #6 cylinder is at TDC on compression stroke.

I second it doesn't matter if you crank the engine around the dots will line up dot to dot , a good method is always line up the dots on the old gears before removal .

The Pontiac Service Manual shows the Dots on Top.
