how wide of a tire can I get under my 98 ws6.

Assuming you have 275/40x17 now some people try squeezing in 305 or even 315 but if you are not changing the wheel also, 295 is the safer bet. You probably will have to go to a 35 profile to maintain the same or slightly smaller tire diameter.
