I have a 2006 Torrent with 68,250 miles on it. I just got it out of the shop at the dealership because the front LH wheel hub bearing was making a humming noise (that grew louder at speeds above 20MPH). That seems like awfully low mileage for a wheel bearing to go bad, don't you think? By contrast, I have a 98 C5 Corvette (original owner) that just went over 200,000 miles and the wheel hubs are fine, no noises at all. Could it be that Pontiac "cheaped out" on some of the parts on this SUV? Just some food for thought.

60-70K miles is typical for a GM FWD hub. Your Corvette is RWD .
The FWD hubs have more stress on them because they not only drive but turn.
On your Corvette the front hubs only have the stress of turning and the rear of driving.

I had this happen to me too...same side too. I think mine started at about 50K and I drove with it for awhile before the humming just got way too loud. The mechanic says its dangerous to drive like that cuz it could lock up. I drive from PA to NYC everyday so the miles add up quick. Cost about 350 for a USED one and now at 130K and I hear it again...not loud but definitely gonna be a problem. Mechanic told me he just did 2 other Torrents for the same thing recently.

I'm not sure if I may be having the same issue. My torrent has approx. 68K miles on it and it has a humming or waning sound the comes from the front end whenever I drive around 45 mph. It will fade off if the car slows or accelerates. I had a 2008 Chevy HHR that did the exact same thing around 45 mph as well.

Torrent Wheel Bearings

When researching the purchase of my '06 Torrent, I read quite a few posts about wheel bearing issues. This is a crossover vehicle, meaning it's built on what is essentially a car platform/chassis not an SUV frame. I guessing that bearings chosen in the design were adapted from car bearings and are not holding up well under the additional load placed on them with a small XUV body. The posts I recall noted that both front and rear hubs were an issue. The above poster is also correct that the fronts handle most of the stress with steering and drive functions, but also handling the additional heat and load from the primary braking wheels. My '06 has 89K mi. on it with original hubs, guess I better be thankful.

Bjarvis,
I would recommend that you have your local dealer look into this for you. They are in the best position to get this issue diagnosed for you. Please keep me posted on this. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me anytime.

front bearings

Just had my dealer replace the front bearings on my Wife's 07 Torrent at 120,000kms. Was $1,400 for two front bearing hubs, tire rotation and oil change. Kinda steep in my opinion.
Had the front brake rotors done last summer. The spare tire well leaks in rain and the oil dipstick blows out in very cold weather bathing the exhaust for a nice sweet smell. The gas vent filter plugs in loose snow making it hard to fill. Seems like a weak vehicle in cold climates. Wanted a full size spare tire and was quoted $1,000 for one rim. Crazy!

Make sure to get quality hubs, not Chicom stuff from Autozone or the like. There have been ABS issues with the aftermarket hub assemblies.

I replaced my LF hub bearing on a '06 Torrent with about 100,000 km Did it with a mechanic friend of mine and I tell you it was one hell of a job getting the old one off!! The good side is that the part was under $300 and install only cost me a pizza and a few beers!! :D

I've done this repair a few times my wifes torrent and her friends equinox, I've used the cheap china hubs and expensive hubs. I find you only get about 5K extra on the expensive hubs.

Once you get it off coat the inside of the spindle with anti sieze. it will make the job a breeze the next time.
I can do a hub in about 2 hours, just did one this AM

Now if I could just figure out how to get a rear drum off....

I have a 2006 Torrent also and I started having problems with my front Wheel Bearings when mine had around 24,000 miles on it, it was right side then at 58,000 miles it went out again. 6 months later it was out again then they changed both sides in December 2013 they changed them again and now one is out again at about 85,000 miles. The first two were done at dealerships under warranty the last ones were done by a private garage because the warranty was up. Took it to the dealership and they told me if I would have paid for one repair myself after warranty ran out I would never have to pay for another one. My husband took it in because he wanted to see if he could find out what was causing them to go out and all they wanted us to do was let them do the work so they could charge us again. Something is wrong somewhere!

Just an update, for pricing options. We just took my wife's primary car; 06 Torrent into the local Ford Dealer for Front Left Wheel Hub/Bearing assy noise. They replaced it for $375. 112,000 miles. I was concerned after reading some of these posts, but that's not too bad for a car that is this old. I didn't expect it to last this long.
