Tranny Problems--Assistance Please

Ok...so my 1993 firebird v6 3.4 ltr is a little beat up, not very well kept and its got a lot of miles. I just bought it of a guy that looks like he had an I.Q. of -50 , anyway, the transmission is acting up, i can put the car into drive and let it sail up until about 30 miles an hour through 1st and 2nd but when its ready to shift into 3rd it hits neutral(Censor??? ) I will be able to by a used tranny for about $260 or a new one for about $600 dollars(good deal???) thats only if there isnt a cheaper solution because im on a tight budget. If anyone is able to help me out please let me know, i have aim and i am on constantly on if its easier for anyone to get ahold of me (rotzy69 (s/n))

That does sound like a pretty good deal for a tranny I think. I haven't heard any problem like that so sorry but I can't help with the tranny problem.

One possibility is the shifter is not adjusted right. I had this problem on my racecar with an aftermarket shifter. But with a stock car maybe the shift cable is worn out or streched. Just a thought.
