we have a 99 montana van wife came home and said that the van was making a noise when she let off on the gas she said it sounds like a fan. Took it to the local shop and he put it up on the hoist and said it is the transmission and that it will need to be replaced does that sound like a tranny problem

hard to say without seeing the vehicle, take it to a transmission shop like ammco for a second opinion

Also I would even get a third opinion ,its seems they are to quick to say that a new one is needed, maybe just a filter and fluid change ? How many miles ? Do you tow ? Good luck and keep us posted.

Around 170kms and we do no towing with we are getting a fellow that just deals with transmissions to look at it and another shop to look at it as well

Ok so we took it to a fellow that deals in transmissions and it even has puzzled what the noise is. He took it for a drive and the noise was there when the van was shut off and rolling down the road and when it was in nuetral. He told us to drive it and keep listening to the noise and if it got worse to take it back and he would put it in and get a better look so who do you believe. We are going to a third shop this afternoon to see what he has to say.

well would be great if it was something else like a bad axle/u-joint or even something in the fan belt region.Well I am just wishing good luck for you but never heard that kind of noise from a tranny.

so then it's not internal to the trani, leaves you brakes, cv joints, wheel bearings

If it was a wheel bearing would that noise be heard all the time until you took the load off of one side or the other side. As far as a cv joint dont know much about them

somebody mentioned that if you turn the wheel all the way one way and drive in a circle you would hear the defective CV. Then drive the other way to check opposite side.
