Trans problems. Could it be

the linkage? So....my tranny was bad so i replaced it w/ another one. I JUSt finished the job and it's not working properly.

It goes into first gear but then pops out. That is a classic sign that the dog teeth are worn. The other problem is that it won't even go into 2nd.

ALL other gears are fine from what I could tell.

My ? is, could this be a linkage issue or is it for sure that the trans is bad?

I'm close to positive that the tranny is just bad but I'm hoping otherwise b/c I just spent all week putting this thing in.

Any ideas?

If it isn't a top-loader, it COULD be the linkage( could be a shifting fork, either way-but you'll probabaly have to drop it to pull the case cover to see), but you tried shifting it into all gears BEFORE you put it in, didn't you(or SOME KIND of inspection, at least, I hope!)? Worked then, didn't it? The good news- now that the job's fresh in your mind, it'll take a lot less time, next time! Sorry I couldn't give you better news, though.
