Trans problems?

I dont know exactly what kind of trans i have(because the person i bought the car from didnt know) but i have a 81 Firebird 301 motor.Anyway my trans is having problems shifting to 2nd gear(i cant tell if it goes into 3rd or not)It shifts very late and upon slowing down the only way i can get it to down shift is to tap the gas. Even though I dont know what trans i have,In general what could the problem be? THANKS ALOT :)

Another old post that deserves an answer...

Chances are the trans is shot I would check the fluid and make sure it is still pink if it is dark or black and has metallic fileings it is gone for sure , if the trans is original it would be a TH-350,
depending on the miles you may be better off replacing it than rebuilding it ..
this trans also has a lockup converter and a vehicle speed sensor circuit to actuate it ..
if this circuit fails or is disabled it will over time cause the trans to over heat and burn the clutches
you can replace it with a Non lockup Trans and eliminate the problem in the future
