Transmission and transfercase issues

I have a 2001 awd aztek gt. I started having issues with the trans not shifting past 2nd and the speedometer only reading about 10 mph while doing about 35-40 mph. I changed the VSS thinking that was problem, did same thing, pulled the new VSS and was loaded with metal shavings. Because of the location of the sensor I used a mirror to look in mounting hole and the gear looked destroyed. Now I am trying to replace the transfer case, where the vss mounts, and want to know if the transmission and transfercase need to be removed or if the transfercase can be removed and transmission left in vehicle? Thanks for the link. It seams It might be better to pull the transmission with the transfer case from what I read on that page. Just to get at the clip on the axle looks to be difficult.

Thanks again for that link. That page gave me enough information that with my limited knowledge of mechanics I could use it to remove the transfer case and leave the transmission in the vehicle. I just wanted to reply back so if anyone else need knowledge on removal, it could be done. Thanks
