hello all,

I have a 2001 Montana that has been a great car for most of the last three years. Recently, I've been noticing a whine from the car during initial acceleration. It seems to be transmission related, but I won't count out anything else. It only happens when in gear, and only happens under acceleration. The amount of acceleration doesn't matter. It does not happen when in neutral with the engine running, even at (any) speed. At some times, the shifts are very hard, but other times, they are just fine. Most other shift points are fine. There are times when I can feel the torque converter clutch engage and disengage in quick succession, usually at low throttle when traveling around 38-48 MPH. There are no transmission codes. I have two codes, P1404 and P0446, which should be completely unrelated to the noise or hard shifting. Honestly, I don't even care about them. Also, I *had* a code for the TCC sticking open before the fluid change 10k ago, but that code went away, and stayed away, after that fluid/filter change. I has not come back, even recently.

I dropped a tube down the trans filling tube and pumped out a quart of fluid to check it out. I replaced that quart with seafoam. It was pretty dark; very brown, but not all the way black. I had just changed the fluid and filter 5000 miles ago, and did the same service 10k miles ago. I changed the transmission fluid because I think the transmission overheated during a road trip. I was in a 2-hour mostly standing idle traffic jam in 90-95 degree heat. After about an hour, I noticed that the trans was shifting VERY hard from first to second when traffic would move 10 feet and then stop again. It was whining pretty loudly then, too. I pulled over and let the van cool off for about an hour, and after that, it seemed fine. I changed the fluid after the road trip, and that fluid change was almost black.

So..... I have a few theories, but before I start throwing money at it, I'd like some advice. I think I should change the fluid and filter, again, and see if that does anything for the noise and hard shifting. If that doesn't do anything, move into replacing ALL the solenoids. If that doesn't do it, then I guess the trans is trashed and just waiting to die.

any thoughts?

thanks!!

well if you changed the filter and fluid only 5k ago changing it again will not do anything. The solenoids can cause hard shifting but if you are already at the whining noise stage it sounds like the transmission needs some internal work. Do you have repair facility that you trust and could give you a more definitive answer?

thanks... I was hoping that wasn't the answer :)

No, I don't have a local shop because I've been doing all my own work (thanks in huge part to this group!).

the whining seems to come and go sometimes. I was hoping that the pressure solenoid was sticking in high causing the noise, which I've heard some people say was resolved with fluid changes, adding seafoam, and switching to Dex IV, which is a thinner solution.

Maybe I'll do the fluid change again and see what happens. Is there a good way to get all or most of the fluid out of the trans without killing it further? I know that a good amount of the old fluid stays in some parts when doing the fluid change. I'd like to empty the torque converter and the pressure passages. I can drain the cooling lines easy enough, but that's only so much.

We're already shopping for a new car, so I'm not too heavily invested in saving the van, even though we absolutely still love it :)

what i have done in the past with the pan and filter removed. Start the engine and let it run for maybe 10 seconds. As long as you are in Park it should be fine and the trani pump will spit out some more fluid. I would recommend a product from Lucas for the slipping. It maybe my age but people seem to think Seafoam is the cure for everything in a car that has a petroleum based fluid which I find hard to believe.

cool, I'll try the engine start and spew. The trans is not slipping at all. the only problems are the whine and the occasional hard shifts.

Get some seafoam Transmission fix, drain the transmission enough, to get a full can of Seafoam into the transmission, and then run it for about 100 miles, then dump the fluid & replace the filter (again).

Transmission fluid & filter should be changed at least once a year anyways..

I agree with Pantharen. Seafoam Trans tune is the best you can do. Get a can in there somehow but,,,make sure you do not overfill it ,,,,and ,,run the car a few hundred miles. Even if you leave it in there ,,,it should run better over time.

to follow-up. I tore the thing down, and replaced the solenoids. Along with it, I changed out the fluid and the filter. After assembly, the transmission still whined. After a few hundred miles, the trans is now slipping, so it's a goner. From what little I've read, it sounds like their might be something internal in the torque converter that still causes the noise, but that's academic now. The thing needs a rebuild, and since we've replaced the van with a new one, I'm not sure I'm going to put anything more into it. I don't have a place where I can pull the trans and rebuild it, even if I knew how to do that.

thanks all !
