Ok here is my deal hope your ready for it...
I have a 2003 pontiac sunfire with 75k miles on it. The car started acting a bit funny a few days ago with the engine surging at idle. over the next couple days it got worse and felt as if it lost power it had a hard time over 3k rpm. now the car died completely wont start occationaly it will start for a few seconds but die again. I changed out the spark plug boots and plugs which were never changed (im the second owner) had the car for apx 50k miles. i dont see anything that looks like grounding from the boots or coil pack.
Fuel:
When i press the relief valve on the fuel pressure rail i get a spurt of fuel but not continues. plugs are not wet but i can hear the fuel pump kick on (it was replaced about 2 years ago).
Spark:
Checking all 4 boots (screw driver to frame) They all seem to be working the plugs that I removed were pretty rough black and the tips of 2 of them were pretty much gone. also the plugs are almost full of soot very black.
Before changing the spark plugs and boots the car sounded really bad when cranking kinda like a go cart. Now it sounds much smoother.
Spark plugs: After each replacement of the spark plugs the engine seems much more willing to try and start like its catching and igniting fuel for a second then goes back to just cranking again.
Air: in process of getting a compression tester to check compression can anyone tell me what stock compression psi is please?
Timing belt seems to be in tact and working
Cranking normaly:
Codes: in the process if i can move the car to read codes (if someone can tell me how to pull them without a reader that would be incredible!)
This has me stumped if anyone has had similar problems or knows of common issues with these motors please post below im running out of ideas short of pulling the valve covers off.
Thank you in advance for any assistance i really appreciate all the advice you guys can give.
