Now that I have my '71 LeMans Sport running pretty well I'm ready to clean it up. I already bought the Pontiac Blue engine paint & degreaser but I'd like some input on some other thoughts: what is the correct paint for the air cleaner; gloss, semi or matte? And what about things like the fan shroud and inside fender wells? I'm also thinking of going with a chrome alternator, brake booster & master, should I add chrome valve covers or stick with the painted? <br>

air cleaner and inner fenders semi-gloss black, fan shroud is not painted just clean it, as far as chrome that's pretty much up to you

Thanks for the info. I've been dismantling and found this part with the electrical connector on but no vacuum lines. What is it and what lines need to added?

tcs solenoid valve (transmission controlled spark) It prevents vacuum advance from occurring in any gear other than 3rd. It's for emissions purposes only. Do you really want to hook this back up? Do you currently have a vacuum line attached to the distributor vacuum advance?

Do you really want to hook this back up? You make it sound like I shouldn't - I didn't know what it was. Now that I do, I found it in the manual. Do you currently have a vacuum line attached to the distributor vacuum advance? As I said, only the electric connector was attached. Should I just ignore it and see how it shifts? I haven't had the car on the road yet.

It has nothing to do with how the transmission shifts. It prevent vacuuum to the distributor advance untill the transmission is in third gear. So the engine would be less responsive in 1st and 2nd if you connected it. With it disconnected there should be a vacuum hose running from the advance to a port near the back of the carburetor.

OK, thanks, I'm reading the manual, looking at past threads but I'm still a newbie at this so please excuse my ignorance. I understand the 1st part of your reply but this last part has me a little confused: With it disconnected there should be a vacuum hose running from the advance to a port near the back of the carburetor. I just learned what a T.C.S is and now you're talking about an advance, what is that (distributor)? I pulled the carb to have it rebuilt - here is a picture showing the vacuum lines, is the one you're referring to shown? I know thw heavest one goes to the brake booster, one from the choke to the base of the carb, the one to the curled tube goes to an out of sight place and the one under the choke is just hanging loose - I presume that one goes to the T.C.S.

the base of the distributor has a shiny metal can with a nozzle on it. This is the vacuum advance unit. The nozzle should have a rubber hose running to a port on the intake manifold or carburetor. The original configuration from the factory had the hose from the nozzle on the vacuum advance going to one of the ports on the TCS solenoid. The hose going to the curled tube is probably going to the vacuum modulator on the transmission. It could be the picture but the hose under the choke looks too thick to fit the TCS.

Looks a little better now! Just got the carb back and she runs great! Thanks for all the help!

Wow, it's like night and day, good luck with the car.

Thanks - now on to the body work!!
Another question - did all the LeMans Sports have the fender louvers?

OK, maybe it's my tired old eyes, what fender louvers? Do you mean the body line crease?

OK, i understand what you mean. it was an option called an ornament package or louver package. The part number for the right side was 483929 and had a list price of $3.80 and the left side was 483930 and has a list price of $3.65. These numbers and prices are from a 1983 parts book. Judging by the prices you apparently had to buy multiple pieces to make a complete louver.

Once again, thanks, I thought maybe the fenders were replaced at one time from a different model.
Why are you the only one whoever respondes to me? Am I on a personal link or something - or is it that no one else is interested?

I have a 71 GTO so we are like cousins! Really we have mainly people here with more modern cars.

That makes sense.
Yours looks great! I had a '68 Goat back in "71, that's why I grabbed this when it came along.
It was cream with black interior and a black vinyl top, 400 with his & hers shifter. I sold it to a friend and he wrapped it around a tree a week later! What a shame.
