After a recent oil change a ticking noise appeared coming from the valve train. It sounds to me like a collapsed or clogged lifter. I figure the head will have to be dissessembled to correct this problem, but before i go ahead and dive into that i have a few questions for you guys.
First of all, should i even be driving with the valve train ticking? Secondly, Approx how many hours does this job entail? (Probably going to bring it to a local garage rather then attempting it myself.)
Is this noise common in the 3400's?
And last but not least, should i attempt to seafoam the engine before tearing the head apart?

Could really use some feedback; i'd appretiate it greatly! -802

If you changed the oil on a regular basis I would not use seafoam. I would not drive for any exteneded period of time since you dont really know what the cause is. I assume you checked the oil level? Did the shop use a AC Delco oil filter? What weight oil did they use?

I'm not sure if the oil has been changed in regular intervals, i've only owned the vehicle for a month. The first thing i did when i got the vehicle was give it an oil change, not because it necessarily needed it but so i could start keeping track of these things. I used Parts plus 5w 30 syn alongside a WIX filter.

Did a decent amount of research last night and i think i'm going to get the lim gaskets replaced aswell as swap out the lifters. I'm hoping new lifters wont have a problem with the old cam, but i suppose ill have them check out it's condition while they're at it.

Your switching from an unknown oil to synthetic may have loosened something that is clogging a lifter. In this case I would try the seafoam first.

Agreed, it was a gamble using the synthedic i wish i could've obtained more information from the previous owner. Are you fimilliar with sea foam? i'm wondering if i need to remove some of the existing oil to make room for the sea foam, and secondly do i need to flush/replace the oil after using sea foam?

The instructions are on the product
