Just took a 97 Sunfire out for a ride. No matter what position you turn the knob to, air only comes out the heater vent below. The knob moves with no clicking or hesitation from the off to the defroster position. Any idea what I should be looking for?

assuming the switch is good check the blend door motor to see if it moves when you turn the switch

From what I understand (and I could be wrong) the blend door controls the mix of hot and cool air to control the temp. That is not my problem. My problem is no matter where I call for air to flow out of, it only comes out down below at your feet. If I turn on the AC, call for outside venting, call for heat or call for windshield defrost, air only come out by the feet. I can regulate hot or cold, it always comes out at your feet.

Hey man...I am having the same problem...lol...I tried changing the entire panel thinking the switch was messed up but that didn't fix it. It might be the solution for yours though...my air blows through all the vents at the same time. I'm going to look into the blend door...the guy above suggested the same to me and I said the same thing you did..apparently there is a blend door that directs the air as well. Let me know if you solve your problem and I will let you know if I solve mine.

Are there any videos on how to access this area under the dash? And also, are there any airbag sensors I need to worry about. Some cars have sensors in the dash and you need to disconnect the battery for 2 minutes to prevent an accidental air bag from going off.

I tried a search and could not find a video for the 97 but there is one out there for 04 which maybe different. Anytime you are working on anything electrical disconnect the battery.

@ melsg5. I can't thank you enough for all the help you have given me so far. Right now I have an nasty head cold and can't do much. I did take the car out for the morning paper and can confirm the blend door for the temperature is fine. It goes from cold to hot and back real smooth. On Wednesday, my next day off, I will call the dealer listed in your above reply and make sure I get the right one. I will let you know how it goes. It may be a week or so. We bought the car from my 89y.o. father-in-law for my daughter who gets her license next month.

make sure that actuator is bad before buying it.

We have a fixed vehicle!!! I was talking to a guy who tried it and said the knob didn't feel right. When he pulled it off, the inside of the knob was stripped!! Swapped out the knob and it now works. Go figure.

never came across that one before but glad it was that simple
