water pump??? coolant leak

I recently replaced my radiator cap in my 97 grand am 2.4 twin cam. The old cap had a weird leak, every time i popped the hood i would see steam coming out around the cap so i figured that i lost my seal on the old cap... new cap, no steam... i filled the my radiator and went on my way.... just a couple days ago i noticed a large puddle under my car after i got home from work... i check it out and i seem to have a leak some where toward the back of my engine... i really cant see the leak from the top of the engine or under.... i looked around on the net and from what i have read shows that i may have a bad pump... i want to confirm this without going to a shop... does anyone have and engine diagrams or pics that may help? or estimated prices that a small shop would charge or dealer would charge to replace pump??

dont know if u r going to read this msg or not, but i have a 2000 grand am. from 1996 to 2001, pontiac put out this 2.4L twin cam quad 4 motor, it sucks to work on. my water pump just went out yesterday, repair at a shop, anywhere from $750.00 on up around 1,100.00 +. I can't afford it so i though i would fix it on my own. i was told that you need to take most of the motor apart on pass side. water pump runs off of timing chain. shop mechanic says about 6 hours to fix, i figure about 16 hours for me, but we'll see/ good luck to all w this problem

Hey I replaced my 93 water pump on my own. It is defintly work but it can be done. You have to take off the manifold and disconnect it from the exhaust. Then you have to take off the metal heat shield off from under where the manifold was. Then there is the water pump. The bolts on the water pump are real ***** but it can be done. The pump does not run into the timing chain in any way. The pump cost me about $60.00 from autozone. The shop quated with $235.00 to change it. I figured I could do it and I did. It worked fine. I hope this helps you out some.
