I'm trying to replace my water pump but I can't get the serpentine tensioner pulley out of the way of the timing belt cover. There seems to be a 1/4 drive spot in the tensioner casting but the gap between the fender and the drive hole is so small I can't get to it. Do I need a special tool? I tried to jack the right side of the car up and removed the wheel but that still doesn't give me access to the tensioner drive spot. Is there some kind of very narrow 1/4 drive (or is it 1/2 drive) tool that is special for this application. It would be awful if I had to jack the motor up and remove an engine mount or two. Help would be very grateful.

There is only one bolt that holds it in, in the center of the silver part in the pic. (rear view shown)

A standard 3/8 drive rachet and 14 or 15mm socket takes it off.

Thank you Doug, I found out about that bolt about an hour after I posted my question...I'm learning.

Now I'm trying to figure out how to get the timing belt off. I'm trying to get that tensioner pulley out of the way so I can remove the timing belt and the water pump. There seems to be a hole through a cover to get at a water pump bolt?

Thanks a ton!

Water Pump Removal: ps/alt bracket removal is hard...

That combo ps/alt bracket that I'm trying to remove is giving me a very hard time! It has 2 vertical nuts at the top and 2 horizontal ones at the bottom. I got all but the lower passenger side nut off at the bottom. It's major hard to get ahold of that nut and I'm finding that I'm beginning to wear the corners off of it. I can't get a short socket in there, wrench won't fit onto it so I end up 'trying' to use a box end 15mm and it just can't seem to loosen it.

It's getting to the point where I'm rounding the end of the nut and I don't want to damage it any further. Maybe I need a swivel socket? It may be the motor mount that's in the way of me getting a good grip on that nut. I'm kind of stuck now...great ideas would be appreciated.

I got lucky................ mine broke on the last bolt :) ( aluminum bracket)

No ill effects with only 3 holding it back on. ;)

It is a pain cause you have steel and aluminum together which equals weld !

I remember it was real tight also.

Maybe vise grips on a 6 point socket ? or a little heat ( propane) or rustbuster spray? a 6 point box wrench with another on the other end for leverage.

Thank you Doug!

Thank you Doug,

I still have to go out there and tackle that last bolt that holds the alt/ps bracket on. Maybe I'll go to Lowes or something and look at all there special sockets, tools, and wrenches. I might find something that'll fit that application.

Thanks again Doug!

Water Pump Removal...

Well, I realized that I don't have to remove the alt/ps bracket to do a water pump replacement. I just had to swing the tensioner pulley out of the way by one 15mm bolt that lies directly behind the tensioner.

I also (at first) didn't realize that the way to release the tension on the timing belt in order to remove it is done by way of loosening the 3 bolts that hole the water pump on. There are holes in the back plate that allow you to get at two of those holes. The water pump gear/pulley is on a cam and you can turn it once it's loose. The pulley/gear will be able to be turned inward and enable the timing belt to be loosened so that you can remove it.

There's a casting above the water pump called The Water Outlet and it needs a round O-ring for sealing it. One end of the outlet goes to a small rubber hose and the other end is near the front of the engine and that's where your large radiator hose goes. At the other end of that Water Outlet casting is another gasket, I didn't change that one yet - it's not leaking. That gasket is triangle shaped and has 3 - holes in it.

Anyway I got it all back together, lined up the timing marks, and it's running great. I had a major MAP sensor problem that I've fixed and I'll explain that in my next post.
