Hey guys!

I have this strange idling issue going on with my 02 Sunfire, manual transmission. It has the 2.2 Ecotech engine. So basically when I drive on the highway or whatever, the car runs totally fine. The problem is when I put it into neutral the car begins to stall out and idles very rough. The weird part is that the idle fixes itself when the car rolls to a complete stop for a few seconds. It will sputter for a bit then it will idle beautifully at 900 RPMs no issues. This has been happening a few times in the past few weeks. I did clean the Idle control valve (I think that's what it's called) and it did not fix the issue. There is no check engine light as well. What do you think the issue could be? The car has actually stalled out on its own while I was driving and it's very dangerous because I lose power steering and brakes until I start the engine up again.

Thanks.

there was technical service bulletin requiring a program update related to the IAC. This a copy and paste from the NHTSA site. You also could have a sticking IAC which would require a replacement. You have checked for vacuum leaks, broken or cracked hoses?

Thank you for your reply! I figured that it has something to do with the IAC valve... very expensive. I've had the car for years and never checked the VIN if this car has had any recall fixes. So I'll check out that website. If I find a solution I will let you know.

Thanks

I have done a visual check of my vacuum lines and I did not see or hear anything that would cause any concern. After googling some IAC symptoms, I am fairly certain that's faulty and considering that I've already cleaned it (multiple times) I might have to replace it. I'll probably go to a nearby junkyard and get it much cheaper as the car is not worth paying $100+ for this sensor.
