I was thinking about buying a 1986 Firebird T/A and was wondring if they were factory posi as were the 2nd gen. or will I need to swap out the rear end w/ the one from my 79 Formula Firebird to make it posi trac.

I know some where you would have to check it out to make sure. I know you can't take a rear end out of 79 and put it in a 86 won't work. It would have to be a 82-92 to work.

Neither the second gen or third gens were equipped with Posi unless ordered that way (most were not) and the 82 up use a weak 7.5/7.625 ring gear 10 bolt where the 70-81 used a 8.5 ring gear ..

Any rear end from 82 to 02 will fit. From 93 up, you will need to change parking brake cables. Upgrade to a disk brake unit.

Just to add to waht Zimgxp said the later 93 up rears will bolt in but they are wider and require you to use a different offset wheel in addition to converting to a disc set up (master cyl, prop valve, park cables, and assorted hardware..
IMO more than its worth as the later rears are still as weak as the originals ..
