What is the best engine you can put into a 1997 Pontiac Grand Am GT?

But still for a low price, dont want to have to change alot of other parts, im just about to throw a piston, and if i do i will be looking for a new engine quickly.
 
Grand Ams generally do not offer any engine options other than the stock one that was in the car , although there are a few rebuilders that offer remanufactured engines for a decent price .. I would suggest you check locally for the best rate ...
 
2.2, 3100, and 3400 all came stock. with some time and money you could probably get a 3800 in there but that sounds to be more than what your looking for...

2.2 puts out some power, its nice and light, and they leave a lot more room in the engine bay.
