What is the check engine code 440 on a 1996 Pontiac Sunfire?

My check engine light came on the other day and I took it to Autozone and the guy there told me it was reading a code 440. We checked my gas cap and that is fine, I replaced my air filter last night but the light is still on. I am not sure if the check engine light needs to be reset or not. What else could be causing this error? I LOVE my car and dont want to ruin it by driving it if something needs to be fixed. :) Thanks!
 
Dont worry Tara, driving your car with a code P0440 will not hurt it. It is a code for the evap system indicating there is a large leak in the system. A loose or missing gas cap is the most common source of this code but since you have already checked that, the other sources for the code could be a faulty fuel tank pressure sensor or the associated wiring, faulty purge valve or vent valve, a leak from the o-ring that seals the fuel pump sending unit. I woudn't waste any more time or money throwing parts at it. You will need someone who is qualified to inspect and diagnose your car.
