what transmission would be in a stock 1987 firebird or how would i find out?

I'm doing a custom 1987 firebird. I'm putting a 350 V8 (carbed) in it soon, I'm just waiting for next paycheck. My question would is what kind of transmission would my car have? It has the 2.8L V6 engine right now. Would the stock engine hold up to a 350 carbed? If so what would be the max HP the transmission would take?

The trans should be a 700r4. Tranny life depends on many things. HP vs traction etc. If the 350 is any more than stock, you should look into an upgrade.
