Don't actually have a Fiero but am considering getting one, however I'd love to install a bench seat, similiar the one in an 80's El camino. What would be necessary to make this happen?

I don't think you can. Because of it's compact size, and I'm almost certain that the shifter is in the middle, it's only made for two buckets. I had a teacher that had one.

Word of advise: they were crappy cars. They were a poor attempt by GM to do what was called a mid-engine car (meaning the engine is in the middle of the car, with an actual trunk behind it, as opposed to a true rear engine car like the old VW Beetles or a Porsche 911.) If you really want something similar with the engine behind you, you may want to look at the Toyota MR-2.

Massive customization / fabrication! You would have to put a fuel cell somewhere in the vehicle as the "hump" for the center console is also where the gas tank resides. You would then have to cut out that section of the passenger compartment and weld in flat replacement panels. The flat floor conversion has been done before so it's not impossible, but not advisable.

The Fiero is NOT that bad of a car, engine fires (in the 84's ONLY), myths and misinformation branded the car. And the bean counters at GM prevented it from being properly "engineered" until 1988. The prototype for the 1990 Fiero promised to be even better still with a High Revving 3.2 Liter Twin Dual Overhead Cam V6 that put out around 220 HP and actually laid down better numbers than the vette of the same era. Which GM would not allow a cheaper, faster car than the vette to be produced. One of the remaining 90 prototypes that was not destroyed makes its rounds to the Fiero car shows and is a rather interesting piece to see.
