What's the widest tire you can fit on a 1970-1978 Pontiac Firebird without sticking out past the

fender? Please no guessing, I need solid facts from people who have experience with these cars. I've seen two birds in HPP magazine with 17x8 245/45/17 (4" backspace) up front and 17x9.5 275/40/18 (5" backspace) out back. The thing that perplexes me is it doesn't state if these tire/wheel combos required mods or not.

Any thing that wide you are probably looking at some inner wheelhouse mods like bumping the seat belt area in to clear the tire.. that is a common mod with any tire/rim wider than 9" on the rear ..
I would suggest you contact a wheel manufactuer for better information ..
