i have been having a problem with my car i am tired of taking it back and forth and getting all different kinds of guesses from so called mechanics.
1. my car recently 3 days ago got the starter taken off and rebuilt cause it would not start at work. and when i went to get it the repair guy said it has something else wrong cause it took them a few times to crank it up but i have no problem so far. he also suggested that i may need either a fuel pump or a fuel filter. can someone tell me whats the difference and how would i know which one i need? and how often should i change a fuel filter? please help me someone?

The fuel filter is a small can with an in hose and an out hose. It will be under the car between the gas tank and the engine. They should be changed every 30,000 miles. If you never have you probably should. The fuel pump will burn up if the filter is clogged. The filter will be under $20 at the parts store and is easy to change. The fuel pump is in the gas tank and is expensive, not easy to change. If it was bad the car will never start. I'd change the filter and see how it goes.

a fuel filter makes sure any dirt or foreign materials in the gas doesn't get thru to the engine. The fuel pump forces the gas into the engine. A fuel filter is much cheaper, and you should hope this is the problem .Basically, if the filter is too clogged, fuel will have a hard time getting thru. If the pump is blown, it is hard for fuel to get forced into the engine.

the difference is the fact that you need to find a better mechanic. jr. is taking you for a ride to the bank. if he thinks that the fuel pump is the problem ask him what the pressure range should be is and what are his results at this point. go along this rout with everything that he makes a suggestion for.
