I noticed that the Fieros can experience wheel hop every now and then off of a hard launch (4 speed manual). I was wondering if there is any way to cure this problem? Thanks
Hey there I'm not sure if we've met yet but hello!
as far as wheel hop are you talking about front end or back end.
fieros are the wheely kings of the american car segment. So if it's the front end the only real way to fix that problem is to get some more down force on the nose. Or if it's your shocks in the front it may just be time to replace those.
If your talking about skipping in the back then that could be a couple different things depending on your particular setup.
1) If you have a lowering kit on your car like ajustable coil overs in the back then you may need to loosen them a tiny touch, that will clear up the problem. With coilovers too tight they will be so rigid that any amount of bounce will cause them to skip all the way to school.
2) if you have a stock ride then you could have a few different issues, bad shocks will cause a car to start skipping. bad springs can do the same thing. to correct that you need to replace them.
generally a skipping car is an issue, very few actual stock ride setups will skip naturally. the only car that I've known that this was a problem from the factory was a daihatsu charade. Take a peak and see if those look worn to you.
Thanks for the info
It is in the rear of the car. the Fiero has a stock suspension setup in it with the stiffest springs you could get from factory (ws6). it has 315 000km on it so it probably has worn shocks or bushings then. I tried slipping the clutch out a little quicker to see if it would even squeal the tires or take off at a decent rate but it just had a case of wheel hop and the car shut down (it burns oil, leaks oil and runs VERY rough, doesn't idle sometimes, and will run extremely rough until the check engine light comes on. It pours fuel into the throttle body at a ridiculous rate also. Not sure what would be wrong with it. It has the 2.5L 4 cylinder.)
i am relatively new to this forum though, so hello to everyone!
Actually then I'm gonna give you a better recommendation. Since you are saying kilometers that tells me you are from somewhere outside the US. Are you in canada or UK? pending where you are I'm gonna tell you where to go, but either way I'm gonna tell you to get a whole new Cradle and assembly for the car. you know drop the cradle/engine/trans/harness/struts/springs you know the works off of another fiero at a yard (preferrably with low KMs) and drop your cradle and just re-attach the whole new setup. the easiest way I could tell you to fix all of those problems especially the leaking and the 315000km issue. lol. I really shouldn't be talking about miles though, I have somewhere over 200 grand miles on my car and I have no clue the actual reading because my odometer cut out at 159K on the owner before the last and I carfaxed it and it was estimated at 203K miles at the last smog check so it should now be close to about 220K miles. Still runs but I've been contemplating a full swap. Still haven't fully made up my mind to anything, but, hey I've got time and it still runs so no rush right?
BTW had the odometer work about 500 miles ago so now my car looks like it only has 160K. lol. And incase dale is reading this, I got the stereo to work I just found one blown speaker, The front nose clip is starting to develop a small crack in the fiberglass but I have a buddy that's going to take care of that asap. Found out that the smog issue is the cats and I believe a couple of the sensors are worn so I'm going to replace the O2 and the cats and see if that will help. And I am getting a steel clutch pedal and a new master cylinder instead of rebuilding the old one. Old one is just too worn to even start to mess with it. But I love that little car! Oh and one more thing. I felt big in my car sitting next to the porsche micro roadster. that was the funniest thing in the world me then a porsche and then in the far lane was an MK1 Mr2. funnier than all hell watching the old midget car drag race to the next light. lol
Wheel hop is caused by worn bushings. Especially the cradle bushings.
Replacing the bushings will correct the problem.
If you want higher performance out of the handling, your best bet is to buy a polybushing kit for the car. This will improve handling of the car and remove any flex/slop out of the cradle and suspension. You can get the bushings here: http://www.suspension.com/fiero-prothane.html
