am? right now for the moment i'm looking at trans am's and 240 sx's but .i lean towards american cars the trans am happens to have a choice of automatic or standard transmission and i was wondering how hard is it to drive standard right now i have automatic trans in my van and the pontiac trans for the money and mileage is good also could you tell me how reliable they are. most trans am's on autotrader are kinda on the inespensive side??? so thanks in advance and i don't need both answers if you can only answer one thats okay.

Its really easy to learn, i just learned how to drive stick. Stick is more faster and saves Gas, which is useful now days. So Stick Wins

Any car is a good one if its been properly maintained!!! A Trans Am is pretty sweet! An older one anyway!!

If you like to race... go for manual. I have a 5.0 manual! Freakin LOVE it!!!! If you're really used to your automatic, and enjoy just cruisen'... go w/ the automatic!

Depends on what type of driving you do... If you have to deal with alot of traffic daily, then a standard might not be your best bet, but if not, I say go for it. I have a 6-Speed Manual and I love it, except during rush hour traffic..

Manual = fun!
Automatic = practical.

If you drive a lot in traffic, the manual can be tedious. Whenever the clutch needs replaced, it's several hundred dollars, perhaps $600-$800 if a shop does it. Depending on how it's been driven, expect to replace the clutch somewhere in the 90,000 -130,000 mile range. As far as learning to drive a stick, should take about an afternoon of practicing take-offs - learning where the friction point of the clutch is and coordinating between the clutch and the shift.

A properly maintained automatic (meaning scheduled fluid and filter changes!)should last the life of the vehicle if it hasn't been abused - however, an automatic rebuild can be $1000 - $2200 if a shop does the work.

With proper maintenance, both trannies should be reliable choices - again, just gets back to a matter of your preferences.

As far as buying used - keep in mind that you're buying someone else's problem. It's important to understand what that problem is - whether it's because the person is in a financial bind and needs to unload the car, the car no longer fits their needs, OR the car has significant problems coming up that will take a wad of cash to fix. Always good to look beyond the pretty paint and aftermarket accessories to gain an understanding of just what kind of mechanical shape it's in.
