There is a whistling sound coming from the engine when the car is on. For the most part its when Im actually driving around, it usually goes away if im idling for a little while, like at a stop light or something. Ive also noticed it takes a couple minutes after starting the eninge to make the whistle. Its not a constant whistle but its just a short whistle about once a second. Ive tried tracking the noise down and im pretty sure its not the a/c, and not coming from a slightly cracked window or anything but definitely in the engine itself. Its really difficult to find the noise since when im parked with the hood up to listen for it, it doesnt whistle. Also, sometimes it sounds like there is two different whistles coming from different ends of the engine. So far it doesnt seem to be affecting the car in any way but it is extremely annoying. Any ideas what it could be?

Welcome aboard. What year model is it, and do you have a check engine light on?

Have you tried having someone step somewhat on the gas pedal while you listen for the source of the noise?

Well since it isn't constantly on, your whistle doesn't sound like a major air leak.. Has it felt like you have been losing any power when the whistle is on? When you have the hood open and the engine running, have you tried opening up the throttle a little bit?

TheDrizzle,
If you are unable to identify the noise that you are hearing I would recommend that you have your local GM dealer look into this for you. Please keep me posted on this. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me anytime.

No disrespect Stacy, but I don't think people come to this forum to get told to go to a dealership for all of their problems.

noise=??

heres one i heard of lately!! seems -when the air cleaner/ ducts - are not installed correctly/ properly -this will craete a wistleing sound!! search all air ducting in air intake area.

I had my 99 Bonnie whistle while it worked.

It could be a PCV valve is plugged. This will cause the lower part of the engine, the oil pan area to breathe from another source. That source could be the main bearing.

To determine if the source of the whistle is originating from the oil pan, start the engine and remove the oil filler cap. If the whistle goes away, the air intake switched from the bearing to the oil filler tube.

This would be a good indication that the PCV valve is plugged, replace PCV valve.
