Why does my Pontiac Firebird make a grinding noise when I shift into reverse.?

I have a standard 1998 Pontiac Firebird and when ever I shift into reverse, it makes this horrible grinding noise

Occasionally when I come to a complete stop and I then put it in reverse it wont make that noise, but that is only occasionally...
