Why is my firebird making a grinding/screetch noise when accelerating?

It does it when accelerating, not always but everyonce in a while. Sometimes it will make the car a little bumpy (rough ride) when it makes the sound, but the sound goes away pretty fast, Im not sure what this is. I know i need new Tie Rods mine are REALLY BAD! is that what it is? Possibly Axles? Its a 1996 Firebird. Thanks for the help.
 
does it make the noise when standing still and you rev the engine? can you tell if the noise is from the front of the car or the back? Do you have a loose engine belt? tie rods dont make noise they make sloppy steering until they fail and then you lose control of the car.
