Why wont my Pontiac Grand Prix wont shift when the car is first started?

When i first start up my car after it has sat overnight or even for a couple hours it doesnt want to shift out of park for about 30 seconds, ill put it into drive or reverse and it doesnt go until it warms up a lil bit. what is going on?

do you have your foot on the brake when you are trying to shift it out of park?
