Why would the turn signals on a 1997 pontiac sunfire stop working?

My 1997 Pontiac Sunfire's turn signals stopped working, and I was wondering what causes this, and how to fix it.
 
did you check the fuse? did you turn the signal on and get out of the car to check if you have burnt out bulbs?
