I owned a 99 GA and the motor was destroyed due to the intake manifold gasket problem. Now I am looking at a 2003 GAGT. Did GM ever fix this problem or will I be doomed again?
a lot of it depends on how the car was taken care of. Some of these cars last forever, some will die in 100k miles. the GT had a different intake anyways, bumped the hp up from 160 to 210 so the gaskets would be a bit different anyways.
well it was the 3.4 liter in the 99 that had 170 hp, while the gt got the 3.4 with 175 hp. All had the LA1 motor. I know that GM started using a new IMG, but I am unsure when they started to use it. Again I am looking at a 03 GAGT.
The gaskets never changed. GM still used these same intake gaskets up to 05 for sure that I have replaced. Havn't had any in the shop newer than that for leaks yet. Doesn't matter how much HP or the model, GT,SE, 1996, 2003, 2001, Chevy, Buick, Olds, Pontiac, ect....... If it came with a 3.1 or 3.4 it had the same gaskets. They never changed. Even the aftermarket gaskets were the same style plastic scrap just with tha addition of steel inserts at the corners to help keep the gaskets from smashing. Until recently it's all you had. Fel-Pro now has a complete intake set for these engines that is made of steel and seems to fix the problem once and for all.
Yes you will still be doomed but you can avoid it by having them replaced with the new style Fel-Pro gaskets at the first sign of leakage. If you need a part number lmk.
