Wiring a backup camera

Hi guys! New to the Torrent family. I have a 2008 base AWD 4 door.

I’m trying to wire a backup camera to my upgraded stereo. I need to connect a negative wire to the tail light but the plate where I have to mount the camera is on the hatch and the tail light isn’t. Anyone have recommendations on how to do this?

It's a little strange that you would have to connect a ground to anything other than any piece of metal.
If you really need to connect to a taillight you have to run the wire from the plate to perhaps the license plate light assembly wire harness into the hatch and to the wire harness going from the hatch to the body and then to the taillight.

Any recommendations for a wiring route from the stereo to the back of the car?
