Hi Folks,

I know this topic has been beaten to death; that said I have never found a straight answer related to my specific vehicle/starter. When I replaced the starter, I simply followed the wiring exactly as it was on the old starter as that starter worked flawlessly for years.

The configuration is quite simple - i'm not convinced it is correct though. As a side note, I now have a jumpy tach that did not exist before. Anyway, my wiring is as follows - the positive battery cable to the large solenoid bolt, and all of the other smaller wires to the small solenoid bolt.

Starts immediately, runs great at startup and drops down to closed loop as it should. When at idle and driven conservatively, the tach is fine. That said, going into hi revs either accelerating or downshifting the tach acts up (above say 2500 rpm) but settles back down at lower rpms. Also when the tach acts up, the shift light (muncie 4 speed) flashes on and off as if something is shorted. I already ordered a tach filter from Rodney Dickman but that is a crapshoot move on my part. Plugs, wires, cap, rotor, battery cables and all sensors are new. Have also installed a known good cluster.

Your input is appreciated.

why do you mention the starter?
did this problem only show up after you replaced the starter?

From what I read, the pickup coil in the distributor is going bad and has to be changed which means removal from the motor , pin on the gear has to be removed and then the distributor can be taken apart and the pickup can be changed.

There are tests you can do to confirm this.

Well Gents,

All of the problems are resolved, and it was as simple as replacing the positive battery cable to the starter. Cable looked good but once replaced everything is resolved. No more tach problems, car runs great. Thanks for the input

glad to hear you solved it but would have expected more problems with a bad cable than just the tach.

In my experience any Battery cable over 10 years old is suspect, it is amazing what strange issue's a bad cable or even a bad ground can cause.

Glad you solved the issues, thanks for letting us know.
