I have 99 sunfire GT 2.4l and I just replaced the starter. I guess because I had the battery unhooked for a hour, it activated the passive security, as I cannot start it now. The starter engages but no spark, solid security light on. Have tried key on wait for ten minutes multiple times, and again after disconnecting battery for 3 hours. Just left the key in run overnight, still won't start.

Did you disconnect the crank sensor by accident when you took out the starter?

try using either the keyless entry or the key to unlock the door. whichever you don't use on a regular basis. if that doesn't work, try disconnecting the battery overnight. that should reset everything

Not sure what the crank sensor is. There was 3 wires on the positive and 1 on the negative. They appear to be hooked up ok, it is very cramped in there.

I tried all of that, no go.

The crank sensor is bolted to the engine block in the same area as the starter. It has a 2 wire connector, wires i think are yellow and blue. It is very common to knock the connector so that it disconnects when replacing a starter in this engine.
Look very well around the front of the engine for either a wire harness that not plugged into anything or a sensor that missing its wires.

but would accidently disconnecting the crank sensor cause the security sys to kick in and disable the car?

and Flathed, sorry I can't help more, thats the only thing i can think of. i just bought my sunfire 2 weeks ago, so im still learning the electrical and all
